Prior to the 1978 expansion, there were two South American teams being specially produced by Subbuteo. Argentinean side River Plate were the first South American club side to grace the Subbuteo team charts - introduced as team 059 in 1969-70, and they were followed by another legendary Subbuteo number 165 - Brazilian side Santos. Both are distinctive kits, but I'm not sure what prompted their production.
August 2003 - More hard work from Bernard Cros - city names have been
added for the South American teams.
July 2007 - New Zealand sides added thanks to Kevin Blair.
Argentina.
Argentinean production started with River Plate in 1969, and another six teams were added in the 1978 expansion. These teams lasted until 1987. No other sides are seen until 1994, when eight new kits are produced, and other teams are fitted into the existing range. It's worth noting that the original River Plate, and the later teams are all light skinned players, whereas the 1978 teams (294-298) are dark skinned like their international team, and like the Brazilian club sides.

Brazilian team production begins with 165 Santos in 1973-74. This was obviously a popular kit, and remained in production right through to the final full Hasbro range of 1996. However, doubts have been cast as to whether Santos ever played in a green and white kit. It always struck me that this kit was just a shorts colour away from Zaire - 176, but this is probably a coincidence. Other teams appeared occasionally after this. 1978 saw 299 and 300 appear, then there was 507 in 1981, 399 and 400 in 1983, 601 in 1985, and 737-739 in 1992.

As mentioned elsewhere on the site, NASL teams were produced in 1978 and 1982. The first range seemed to be mostly for the European market, but the second range was pushed in America as well. The early teams can be found in heavyweight, zombie or lightweight. Teams shown with a star folded before the Subbuteo versions were released, and I am not sure as to whether the teams were ever produced.

Squeezed onto this list, because they don't really fit anywhere else, there were six teams were produced for Subbuteo's South African market in the 1970s. In addition, a seventh side (Berea Park) appears on ref 138. The teams were in the range 1973-82

A surprise addition to the team range, these teams did not appear in the UK catalogues. However, when New Zealand distributors Theo Holdsworth & Sons Ltd, Auckland reprinted the 1981 catalogue (as a poster) they added their own page of teams and accessories that were "readily available". In their team list they included the names of the top New Zealand teams of the day - and here they are....
